You should never speak truth to power...
The Galactic Empire is dying and chaos and anarchy are breaking out everywhere. After a disastrous mission against terrorists on Earth itself, Captain Edward Stalker of the Terran Marine Corps makes the mistake of speaking truth to power, telling one of the most powerful men in the Empire a few home truths. As a result, Captain Stalker and his men are unceremoniously exiled to Avalon, a world right on the Rim of the Empire. It should have been an easy posting....
Well, apart from the bandits infesting the countryside, an insurgency that threatens to topple the Empire's loose control over Avalon, and a corrupt civil government more interested in what it can extort from the population than fighting a war. The Marines rapidly find themselves caught up in a whirlwind of political and economic chaos, fighting to preserve Avalon before the competing factions tear the world apart. They're Marines; if anyone can do it, they can.
The battle to save the Empire starts here.

Captain Stalker and his company-sized marines, pay dearly when he tells a corrupt Imperial Senate precisely why civilians died in a battle against the Nilialists (a death group). Exiled to the world of Avalon, they soon face an up-hill battle to keep the planet from devolving into a full-scale civil war. With lawless bandits, a corrupt government and an insurgent group thrown into the mix, it's hard to see how Stalker and his marines will be able to save the planet and its inhabitants. Nuttall as usual provides readers with a great story, as well as a well-developed setting that gives you a window into the collapse of a human Empire. It should be noted that there are some scenes (rape, violence, sex scenes) that, while not too graphic, are contained in this book. I suspect the inclusion of such scenes is to reinforce and illustrate both the break-down of Imperial law and order structures and the existence of man's vices and inhumanity.
Overall, a great addition to the military genre that has great characters, good action and excellant world-building. Looking forward to reading the other books in this series :)

The Empire Corps (Audible Audio Edition) Christopher G Nuttall Jeffrey Kafer Podium Publishing Books Reviews
This is something different. While there are lots of Marine Corps in space books, some of which are better, this one brings something new to the table that made for a very good read.
Differences
A galactic political commentary that speaks to our own state of the planet.
Sex. Nothing too over the top, but an acknowledgement that this is something that happens out there in real life.
View of what is going on at multiple levels and views. From commanders to foot soldiers to the common man, also from both sides of the conflict.
Cost. You can get started in this series without buying an outrageously expensive ebook.
A view of how planets might be colonized and the phases they would have to go through before being self-sufficient.
Space is still big. Months to get between stars, limits to communications over such long distances.
Marines are tough but still human.
I've read a lot of books in this vain, have some real favorites. Interestingly, they are all series and in part that is what I have enjoyed in the development of the stories. The best thing I can offer on the value of this book is that after reading it, I will be following up with the rest of the series. It is that good.
This was a decent military science fiction story, about a group of space marines sent to a planet to keep the peace, only there are some things going on beneath the surface of the society that could be real trouble for them. The action scenes were well done, the characters fairly cardboard and flat. It was a bit too black & white, good & bad, right & wrong for me. I guess I like a little more depth in the characters and story. Sure, it's always nice to see the good guys beat the bad guys (no spoilers here, you know this will happen), especially when they're so very good and so very bad. A three-star score for me usually means that I finished the book but probably won't read any more in the series.
Disclaimer I know Chris from an Internet forum, have written guest posts for his blog (the Chrishanger) and gotten guest posts from him for my blog (The World According To Quinn), and done review swaps. That said, the following is my honest opinion...
I've got a history masters and one of the time periods I'm most interested in is Late Antiquity, when the Roman Empire split and the western half fell to barbarian invasion. The galactic empires of space-opera and the difficulties in running such a large polity provide lots of room for analogous situations, and Chris has delivered a fun one here. I generally buy e-books to read while on the elliptical at the gym and although many e-books aren't absorbing enough to make the workout go by quickly, this one certainly was. It's fun, there aren't any boring bits, and it sets up an interesting world to tell more stories in, as Chris certainly has.
That said, there are some flaws in it. I spotted a few typos and usage errors ("breech" instead of "breach," for example). Furthermore, most of the villains in the piece seem to be sexual predators. I understand that particular sin is a distressingly common one, but there are less lurid ways to make people villains. Lust (or Wrath, for those who are into it for sadism, power, etc) are only two of the Seven Deadly Sins. There are other ways to make villains hate-able.
Still, I would recommend it, and will seriously consider checking out more in the series...
I really enjoyed the incredible depth of the worldbuilding evident in this book, as well as the quickly paced action and all too real politics (both on and off of Earth). The story of some of a nation's last and staunchest defenders being exiled for refusing to do a poor job is all too believable, both in the modern day and in the far future. The author clearly has an enormous galaxy in mind, and I can't wait to see where this universe will take us in the future. The characters are utterly believable, as is the dialogue, but while both work well, you will mistake neither for the work of a true master. Nonetheless, this is a fantastic book well worth your series.
